Web Writing: Create a Home-Based Business Fast

Have you always dreamed of having your own home based business? With the growth of the Web and the economic downturn, more and more businesses are moving their operations online. This means that there are many more jobs for competent web writers. If you have writing skills, this is a great time to create your own business.

However rather than plunging in, do some preparation first to ensure success.

1. Plan Your New Business: How Much Time Do You Have?

If you’re working a full-time job, your time is limited. How many hours a day can you devote to your new business? If you estimate that you can spare two hours a day, make sure that you schedule those two hours.

If there are other people in your household, talk to them about your plans. Writing takes concentration, so ideally choose a room with the door for your home office.

2. Review Your Assets: Do You Have Writing Samples?

The kind of web writing you do will depend your experience. If you have marketing experience, then Web copywriting is an option. Web copywriters are well-paid, so create some writing samples of web sales pages and other advertisements.

If you don’t have marketing experience, you can write web articles. Web articles are very simple to write: they’re usually under 800 words, and are always targeted to a specific keyword.

Writing samples are essential, so don’t think that the time you spend creating them is wasted. Good writing samples are your calling card, so create at least three writing samples to show to prospective clients.

3. Create a Bio and Portfolio

As a web writer, you’re not applying for a job, therefore rather than creating a resume, you’ll create a bio. A bio is simply a short summary of your experiences in relation to the kind of web writing projects you’re undertaking.

Your portfolio comprises your writing samples, as well as any other writing that you’ve done which may be relevant.

4. Advertise Your New Business

Your final step is to advertise your new business. There are many ways you can do this. The fastest way is via paid advertising.

However there are many ways that you can advertise your business which are totally free. For example, there are many free online classified sites which work well.

A tip: if you’re using free advertising methods, realize that you will need to create more than one ad. You’ll need to create many ads over several weeks before you start getting writing jobs.

Peter Temple’s Jack Irish: a mystery series you can sink into

When I find a new mystery writer I enjoy, I tend to read everything he/ she has written. I’m currently working my way through Peter Temple’s Jack Irish series.

Jack Irish reports:

“Arguably the most successful Australian crime writer of recent years, South African-born Peter Temple is best known for his Jack Irish books. He’s won Australia’s Ned Kelly Award for Best Crime Novel three times — more than any other writer. A former journalist, editor and lecturer, he decided to become a full-time freelance writer in 1995. He published his first novel, Bad Debts, which introduced Jack Irish, in 1996, and promptly won the Ned Kelly Award for Best First Crime Novel). He’s so far won three more, for Dead Point (2000) and White Dog (2003), both Jack Irish books, and one for Shooting Star (1999), a standalone. Temple’s other thrillers include An Iron Rose (1998) and In the Evil Day (2002).”

The Jack Irish books are highly enjoyable if you like great writing. If you’re Australian, there’s a bonus: you’ll love the way Temple captures the idiom and typical Australian characters.

I’m enjoying Jack Irish so much, I (almost) prefer him to the wonderful Murray Whelan — almost.

My only quibble: I wish Temple would write faster. :-)

Article Magic: profit from Web articles

In next week’s issue of Fab Freelance Ezine we discuss “Article Magic.”

Here’s an excerpt from the Editorial:

Hi fellow writer – welcome to this week’s issue, in which we discuss “article magic”, otherwise known as “article marketing”. I’ve always thought of article marketing as magic, because nothing else is as powerful in building your writing career and business.

When you become an expert article marketer, not only can you use these skills to get writing clients, you can also use the skills on your clients’ behalf, increasing their sales and income.

What’s article marketing?

“Article marketing” means using articles as advertising – as promotional tools. This is the primary way in which I, and many other Web writers and marketers, use articles. We use articles to get results.

In 2009, I’m still getting enquiries and making sales from articles I wrote way back in 2000. This is an amazing return on investment. For half an hour or so of time, I build my business (and clients’ businesses) an article at a time.

Read the rest in Tuesday’s issue: join the thousands of other freelance writers who get free writing tips every week to help them to build their writing income.

Mary, Queen of Scots, and the Murder of Lord Darnley

I’m currently reading Mary, Queen of Scots, and the Murder of Lord Darnley, it’s a long book but it’s fascinating.

You find yourself worrying about Mary, even though you know how it’s going to end. If you love history, you’ll enjoy this book.

I’m hunting down Alison Weir’s other books too, she’s a new author to me, and has a way of bringing the past right into the present.
