Writing for Fun and Money: Make Your Creativity Pay

ocean2-1.jpg

Want to make money writing? Here’s a simple truth: your income is related to your creativity and you can only be creative when you’re having fun. Let’s look at how you can make your creativity pay.

1. What Kind of Writing Would You Like to Do?

Start by deciding what kind of writing would be fun for you.

Do you want to write articles? Many new writers start off with articles because they’re easy to write, they’re relatively short, and on the web the standard is pretty low.

Make a list of the kinds of writing that you would like to do. If you’re not sure, check out the some of the many writing blogs online. These blogs will give you an idea of the options open to you.

It’s important to realize however that you can write (almost) anything you please online, and as long as there are advertisers in that particular area you will make money.

2. Writing That Sells: Articles, Books, Copywriting

Certain types of writing sell well online: articles, ebooks, and copywriting.

Tip: copywriting is writing to sell; it’s marketing communication. If you have previous marketing experience you can make lots of money writing copy for the web, however if you don’t have this kind of experience, stick to “content”, that is, informative writing.

3. Instant Money? Earn While You Learn

Because the web is so new, and the demand for content is so great, even new writers can make a great income. This means that you’re earning while you’re learning.

However do realize that you need to continue to learn — the more you know, the more money you can make. Constant learning will enhance your creativity.

Here’s why I want you to focus on creativity. Many writers never learn that creativity pays. These are the writers who want to copy what everyone else does, rather than being original, but copying severely limits your income.

I can’t tell you how to be creative — you’ll be creative in your own way because you’re an original. There will only ever be one you, with your experience and your talent. Trust your own instincts. Be creative and write and your potential for success is unlimited.

Writing: Get Creative, Make Money

Want to make money writing? The more creative you are, the more your income will increase. Let’s look at three tips which will help.

1. Write What’s Fun for You

When you are paid for your words, the more words you can write the better. However, it’s very difficult to write about something which you actively dislike, or which bores you.

For example, if you’ve been hired to write an ebook about a particular topic, and you know nothing about the topic and are bored by the research and writing process, chances are you’ll never complete the project. Not only will your client be annoyed, but you’ll feel bad about yourself too.

That’s not to say that you can’t write on topics which bore you, there are ways in which you can prime your creativity. However, when you’re new to writing, choose your topics carefully. You can only be creative when you’re inspired by a project… and that means, when you like it.

As you make friends with your creative self, you’ll be able to write about anything.

2. Set a Word Count Goal for Each Day

Here’s a vital truth: you get ideas for your writing when you’re actually writing, and not when you’re thinking about writing. Nor do you get ideas when you’re talking about writing: many writers find that talking about their current projects results in writer’s block.

Therefore, set a word count goal for each day and meet that word count.

You’ll find that if you create a schedule for your writing, and focus on the process of writing, the creativity will take care of itself. You’ll be amazed at how much more creative you are when you have a framework into which that creativity fits.

3. Start a Blog, if You Don’t Have One Already

Blogging is an amazing creativity tool.

Here’s why. As with our second tip in which you set a word count goal for each day, blogging provides a framework for your writing. When you know you have to write a certain number of blog posts each week you’re forced to be creative. Over time that creativity becomes a natural way of working for you. You stop worrying about writing, and you just get on with it and write.

Creativity is natural, and everyone is creative. You’ll be most creative as a writer when you focus on enjoying your writing, and have framework into which your writing fits. With such a framework, you’ll find that you’re happier as a writer too, and you’ll make more money writing.

Writing: 5 Tips to Nurture Your Creativity

balloon-1.jpg

Your creativity is the bedrock of your writing career. However every writer knows that at times you’re much more creative than you usually are. Let’s look at five tips which will help you to nurture your creativity so that you’re more creative more often.

1. Take Walks for Exercise: Go Alone

Your creativity lives in your right brain, and your right brain “thinks” in images. Your right brain is completely nonverbal, therefore feeding your right brain images tends to prime the pump, so that you become more aware of images as they float into your consciousness. This images are translated by your verbal left brain into words.

Movement seems to enhance this image-creation process.

Go for a daily walk. It doesn’t matter where you go, you can walk somewhere in nature or you can stroll through your local shopping mall. Here’s what’s essential: go alone. As you walk and look around you, you’re feeding your brain with images. When you return and go back to your writing you’ll write much more easily.

2. Take Long Baths or Showers

I’ve no idea of why water enhances your creativity, but it does. It can be very annoying. You climb under the shower and before you know it you get a great idea for your writing. Keep a notepad in the bathroom so that you can capture these ideas.

3. Play With Your Writing: Make It Fun for Yourself

You’d laugh if you could see my office. It looks like a child’s playroom. I have coloring pencils, paints, and large drawing pads. I know that doodling stimulates creativity, so several times during the day I take a large pad and doodle. I just relax, have fun and enjoy the colors.

When I go back to writing, I get an instant rush of ideas.

4. Relax, and Take Deep Breaths Every Hour or So

Writing is stressful. Without meaning to, you’ll find yourself tensing up. This leads to RSI and worse. It kills your creativity. At least once an hour, or preferably two or three times an hour, stand up and take several long, slow deep breaths. Stretch. You be amazed at the difference it makes.

5. Use Your Imagination: “See” Tasks Completed

Try this. Before you start a writing task, close your eyes for a moment. In your imagination, see yourself writing easily and effortlessly. See yourself enjoying your writing. Then you see yourself completing your writing task and being thrilled with what you’ve written.

This is autosuggestion. In a sense, you’re hypnotizing yourself. This is very powerful, and it works.

Writing: Get Motivated to Write

doll-1.jpg

Have you lost your motivation for your writing? Unfortunately this can happen at any time in your writing career. The reasons this happens vary; here’s how to get back on track.

1. Tap Your Creativity: What’s Fun for You to Write?

Often the reason you’ve lost your motivation is that your writing has ceased to be fun for you. It’s amazing that when you send an article query, you’re very eager to write the article, but a week later, when the editor calls you and gives you the go-ahead, you suddenly become completely unmotivated. You’re blocked.

This happens when you develop resistance. (We’ll discuss resistance in a moment.)

If you’re suddenly blocked on a writing task, it’s time to tap your creativity. Ask yourself what would be fun to write. Make a list. Start the list in this way “it would be fun for me to write ___________”

Make the list as long as you can.

2. Resistance Has Meaning: What’s Holding You Back?

Resistance to writing, that is procrastinating on a writing task, always has meaning. The meaning is rarely obvious. You can find out why you’re resisting a writing task very easily.

Set a timer for 10 minutes, grab a writing pad and pen, and start writing with this phrase: “I don’t feel like writing because___________”

Write without removing your pen from the paper, just write anything that comes to mind. After about four minutes you’ll get to the reason you’re procrastinating. Don’t be surprised at what comes out. When you remove the reason for your procrastination (just writing about it may remove it) you’ll be able to get back to writing, and you’ll write easily.

3. Shush! Talking About Your Writing Often Kills Motivation

Many professional writers make it a rule never to discuss their works in progress. This is a good rule. You can waste the energy you should be used in writing by talking about it.

4. Study and Learn: the More You Know, the More You Can Write

You can become unmotivated when you don’t know enough about a topic, or when you’re bored with what you’ll currently writing about.

Learn something new. You can learn to sky dive or bake a cake: what you learn doesn’t matter. However, you should discover that the mere fact that you’ve learned something new will inspire you to write.
