Writing to sell: forget your JOB, write inventory

If you want to sell your writing, you need to make that your goal.
Then, since SALES are your goal, you need to have something to sell.
I know this sounds completely and blindingly obvious, but I know from working with my students, that it’s not.
Many/ most writers start out by thinking of their writing as a J.O.B. (Just Over Broke). They want to be paid for their writing while they write.
This is fine, but unfortunately when you get paid for your services, you’re just being paid for your time, and that makes your writing a J.O.B.
Transition from writing SERVICES to writing PRODUCTS as soon as you can
When you get paid for your writing products, you’re no longer bound by the time clock. You create products (books, ebooks, reports etc) and these products sell without any intervention from you. You can take a month off, while your products go on selling.
Think PRODUCTS and INVENTORY
When you sell products, your aim is to have an inventory of products.
Let’s see how this works for other business people. If you’re a creative, and you’re trying to sell your work, you’re a business person whether you face the fact or not.
Let’s say you’re a real estate agent. A realtor’s inventory is listings. You need listings. Lots of listings. The more listings you have, the more properties you can show a potential customer, and the more likely it is you’ll sell a house.
Or let’s say you’re Kmart. How much would you sell if you only had two items to sell in the whole store?
Artist and photographers are happy to create material for their inventory, writers much less so.
Among writers, a common view is: “I’ll write it if someone promises to pay me for it”.
Or: “I wrote this, but I haven’t been able to sell it. This means that I’m a lousy writer and I’ll never be able to sell anything, so I’m not writing anything else until someone tells me that I’m wonderful and talented and promises me that I’m going to sell the next thing I write.”
Two ways you can create an inventory and sell your writing products
There are many ways you can create inventory.
One of the easiest is to write ebooks.
Another easy way is to write Private Label Content.
You can also write books for traditional publishers of course, but this is a slow way of creating inventory. I’d suggest you combine books with something a little faster, like ebooks.
Write more – the key to your writing success
Yes, you can write more – even if you’re a world-class procrastinator.
(Writing MORE is essential when you’re creating products to sell.)
Did you know that when you write more, your writing improves? Many of my writing students experience this. They find that when they write more, writing is easier for them – they’re not dominated by their inner editor.
My new writing class, “Write More And Make More Money From Your Writing: Develop A Fast, Fun Productive Writing Process” is based on lessons I developed for my private coaching students to help them to write more, improve their writing, and make more money writing.
If you’re struggling with your writing, the class will help. The techniques you’ll learn in class with help you write fiction, nonfiction, and copy for business.
Discover how you can write more, improve your writing, and sell more of your writing to higher-paying markets.
