Making the transition to writing for the Web

With the release of Sell Your Writing Online NOW (SYWON), I’ve had many questions about making the transition to writing for the Web from writing for print.

Firstly, let’s look at the major difference between print writing, and Web writing – getting writing gigs. When you write for print, you offer proposals to publications, and wait for acceptances. When you write for the Web, buyers tell you what projects they want written, and you write those projects.

Writing for print – you waste time writing proposals which never sell

When you write for print publications, you’re always looking for gigs. With top tier publications, it can take you many approaches before you get a commission. It’s common to send anywhere from ten 15 queries to a major magazine before you get a nibble, for example. This is a lot of wasted writing time.

So as a print publication writer, a major part of your day is spent writing for free – you need to send out lots of article proposals, many of which never get sold.

Writing for the Web – buyers offer you projects

On the other hand, when you write for the Web, buyers come to you, offering you their projects, which you either accept, or decline. There’s almost no speculative writing, in the sense of writing proposals, when you write for the Web. You write, you get paid.

Making the transition to the Web: you must become visible

As a Web writer, your aim is VISIBILITY, because once you’re visible, buyers come to you. There are many ways to become visible, the primary way is by creating a Web site to promote your services.

So your first step, as you transition to writing for the Web, is to create a small Web site promoting your services.

Creating a small site is easy, and it’s free. The site acts as your sales person for your services; buyers offer you projects as soon as they know what services you provide, and the prices you charge.

Your Web writing services can be simple: perhaps you write articles. Or they can be complex – perhaps you write ebooks, or create Web sites.

You can make the transition to Web writing at any time. Writing for the Web is a whole new world – a much freer, and more exciting world. With each project you complete, more opportunities will be available to you.
