If you’re tired and bored with your day job, here are five tips which will help you to create a writing business that’s a rip-roaring success. And it can happen much more quickly than you imagine.
Here we go:
1. Start your business providing ONE writing service
It’s easy to get confused when you’re building your writing business; you lose focus. Here’s what I recommend to my writing students: start with ONE thing, not with a dozen.
For example, let’s say you hope to cover the spectrum of online writing in your new writing business: blogging, PLR, Web content, Web copywriting, etc.
You can certainly do them all, but not all at once.
So focus on Web content. And niching content down even further, focus on articles. Start your writing business just offering articles. Once you have ten clients, you’ll find that you’ve magically branched out into blogging and other services, because your clients will have asked you to provide them.
Start with ONE service. If you start with too many services, you’ll confuse potential clients, and if they’re confused, they won’t hire you.
2. Write as much as you can, and market your writing
A lot of the work that happens in a business is invisible to you if you work for someone else.
When it’s all up to you because you own the business, you have to decide what’s important for you to be doing right now. You need a list of what must get done today, this week, and next week, and you need to keep up to date, even if it means working on Saturday and Sunday.
So, in your writing business, your first priority is writing, and the second is marketing. When your business is brand new, your only priority is marketing.
Marketing is what gets you clients, and without clients, you don’t have a business.
3. Learn constantly – learning is the engine that drives you to success
When you work for someone else, your employer trains you so that you can do your job effectively. When you own your writing business, learning is on-going. You need to learn about business, as well as about writing.
Learning needs to be fun for you. You must see it as an investment in yourself. The Internet is a blessing, and you’ll find many training packages online. You don’t even need to leave the house to learn something new.
Years ago, I took a two-year marketing and PR course. That investment of time and energy has repaid itself a million times.
4. Ignore setbacks – they could be the best thing that ever happened to you
Stuff happens. Your computer refuses to boot up. Instead of working on a client’s project you need to take your computer to the repair shop. A client cancels a meeting that you’ve just cancelled another meeting to attend. You get the flu, and have to work anyway, even though you’re so dizzy you can’t focus on the computer screen.
After you’ve been working as your own employer for a while, setbacks like this will amuse you rather than defeat you. You know that in a week or a month, you’ll be laughing about this, so why not crack a smile now?
Over the years I’ve come to realize that the “setbacks” are often blessings in disguise. Many things I thought were setbacks started me in an entirely new area, which I would never have considered without what seemed like a setback at the time.
5. Invest in your writing business to build your business
Your business comes first. This means that when you get a hefty client payment, some of that money will have to go right back into the business.
There’s a cult of “free” online. That’s fine. However, you can’t build a million-dollar business without investing in your business.
So there you have five tips to creating a successful writing business – it’s much easier than you think, and you’ll be quitting your day job before you know it.
