Kill Writing Procrastination for Good with Three Words

Do you put off writing? If procrastination is a challenge for you, you’ll discover how to kill that tendency for good with three short words. Discover what they are.
Let’s start by assessing what writing procrastination is. Basically it’s when you either put off writing something you know how to write, or are scared of writing in general because you imagine that there’s a right way to write something or other.
To become a competent, prolific writer, you need to forget your education. All writing is subjective, and once you leave school, no one is giving you marks out of a hundred. That gives you lots of freedom: make the most of it with three words.
Procrastination Killers – Three Words
Here they are: Do Your Best.
“Do your best” frees you from your tendency to procrastinate, because the operative word is: DO. Just do it. When you do – you write – you also commit to doing your best, in that particular moment.
Writing is both a discovery and a learning experience. The only way you learn how to write is by writing. It’s both a craft and a skill. If you have innate talent, that’s good, but writing talent is useless without application.
Why “Do Your Best” is Powerful and Kills Procrastination
Writing anything involves both your logical left brain, and your non-verbal, creative and intuitive right brain.
If you procrastinate, and don’t start writing, you can’t access your right brain. Since it’s non-verbal, your right brain can’t talk to you: it’s your silent partner. You’ll never realize your silent partner can help if you don’t start writing.
Once you start writing, your right brain leaps in to help.
For example, let’s say you’ve been asked to write a book. If you’ve never written a book before (and even if you have) this can freak you out so much that you never even sit down to write. But when you remember the three words – “do your best” – they empower you to start, and so you write a page or two, or start an outline.
The moment you start writing and focus on it, your right brain gets into the act and starts tossing you ideas, which you write down. An hour later, you’re amazed at what you’ve accomplished. You may only have written three pages, but you’ve made a start. You also realize that there’s more to you than your left brain.
Here’s another example. Let’s say you’ve been sending query letters with article ideas to various magazines. One day you pick up the phone and an editor from X Magazine says: “We really like your idea for __________. I’ll send you a contact. We need it for our Y issue. Can you work to a three-week deadline? I’m offering $N dollars. How does that sound?”
You accept the commission.
Happy days, right?
Not unless you remember “do your best”. Writers who send great queries, are given commissions, and then are never heard from again are the bane of many editors’ existence. If you have a tendency to procrastinate, being commissioned will trigger it.
So there you have it. Three short words: do your best.
When you do your best in any moment, not only is it all you can do – it’s always enough to achieve writing success. And to kill your tendency to procrastination for good.
