Offering writing services is probably the best work-at-home career available. It is legitimate work that is in demand and pays very well, if you know how to do it. Here are some steps to get you started.

1. Write for article banks. Article banks are online services that provide content for websites. Websites get traffic by offering fresh content on a regular basis. Somebody’s got to write that content: Why not you? There are two kinds of these article banks: Those that pay writers for the content they submit and those that don’t. (Those that don’t exist for the writers to promote other products and services through the bio and resource boxes that accompany the article).

Use your search engine to find article banks. Carefully read their guidelines and try submitting an article to one or two of them every day. Don’t know what to write about? Many of these sites have an ever-changing list of titles or topics they are seeking. Claim one and write an article.

2. Try freelance bidding sites. These sites work like an auction: Someone will post a project on the site and writers will submit a bid, including how long it will take them to finish the project and how much they will charge. Bidding sites are especially good for beginning writers because they can quickly get writing projects. The downside is that all too often the lowest bid wins, meaning the pay will be low. However, if you demonstrate that you offer high quality work for a reasonable (not necessarily the lowest) price, you can get the price you are looking for.

3. Post on classified advertising sites. Just as you would use a newspaper classified ad to let people know you offer a product or service, you can do the same on classified advertising websites. Many of these are free or very low cost.

4. Create a blog and/or a website. People looking for a writing service want to see what you can do. Show off your skills with your own blog and/or website. Be sure to include samples of your work, a list of what services you offer (articles, newsletters, blog posts etc.) and a link to your contact information. There is some debate as to whether to include your rates: Some people say it helps buyers make the most informed decision, others choose to set their rates on a per project basis, taking into account the amount of research involved etc.

5. Use social networking sites. Freelance writers have historically gotten work through networking: A friend of a friend needs someone to produce this brochure or that white paper. Social networking takes the same concept and ramps it up: Now you can reach hundreds of people through your social network contacts. Register for these sites and keep people informed on what projects you are working on. Very soon, others will find out what services you offer and contact you with a project.

6. Post on topic-specific forums. If you have experience with a specific subject (health-care, business, weight-loss, animals etc.) post to forums dealing with that subject. Many of these forums allow you to put a signature line that tells readers about you. When you post, use your signature line to promote your writing services.
