Copywriting Beginner: Learn to Sell and Increase Your Income

How are your sales skills? If you can sell, you can make great money as a copywriter. In this article, I’ll show you how to boost your copywriting skills with three essential insights.

1. It’s All About the Offer — Make a Great Offer

A sale starts with the offer. If you’re offering great value, and can convince the customer of the value of the offer — sale!

Therefore, when you receive a new copywriting commission, check out the offer first. If you feel that the offer isn’t exceptional, work with the client to improve it. You must do this, because especially in these troubled times, customers are looking for value in their purchases.

Many new copywriters imagine that the only way to make a better offer is to lower the price. This is almost always a mistake.

Here’s why. Firstly lowering the price cheapens the product in the customers’ perception, so it’s harder to sell the product. Secondly, it cuts your client’s margins, so effectively you’re sending your client broke.

If your client is desperate, talk him out of making a low-priced offer for the above reasons. It’s always better to improve the offer by adding value.

2. Keep the Language Simple: Your Headline Counts, but So Does Every Other Word

New copywriters worry too much about the headline. Yes, the headline is important. If the headline doesn’t catch customers’ attention, they won’t stick around to read the rest of the copy.

However, once you’ve caught their attention, you need to KEEP it.

The biggest error I see copywriters (both new and established) making is spending too much time on the headline, and then tossing anything they choose into the copy. Often the copy makes no logical sense.

Remember that you’re asking customers to part with their money. So take a machete to your copy and clear out the undergrowth. Keep it simple, clear and effective.

3. Test the Copy: Give Your Client Two Versions

My final sales tip — give your client two versions of your copy, so that he can test it. Yes, this takes more effort. However, it ensures that you have a happy client.

Happy clients for your copywriting services are vital. It’s much easier to build a stable of regular clients than it is to be constantly hunting for new copywriting jobs.
