Professional writing can be a successful career for you in 2010. However, now more than ever, you need three skills in order to make it.
1. Marketing. Marketing is by far the most important skill you need. You need to know how to market your client, to get him or her noticed — in a good way. But in order to do so, you also need to know how to market yourself, to get yourself ahead of the pack. Marketing involves more than just setting up a website. You also need to know how to keep your name in front of potential clients, using Twitter, Facebook and good, old-fashioned, word of mouth.
There are many online resources to help you with various aspects of marketing. Marketing theories and buzzwords change all the time so it is essential you continue learning new methods both for yourself and your clients.
However, while online marketing is all the rage, don’t forget the real world. Join groups like your local chamber of commerce and other business groups: They are an excellent source of real-world and on-line business referrals from people who need your professional writing expertise.
2. HTML (Hypertext markup language). Fortunately, there are many resources available that make it easy for you to quickly learn what you need to know. The more you can do to make things easy for your client will make it easier for your professional writing career to soar.
One way to do this is to look up free HTML tutorials online. There are plenty of these. Also, when you are surfing the web, find pages that you like and figure out how you could code them yourself.
3. Your specialty. While it’s essential to have a grasp of spelling and grammar, it’s also important to have a specialty. There will always be writers who can write about the latest gadget coming down the pike, but few who can clearly explain the ins and outs of, say, tax law, so that a novice can understand them. Do some research and to find a topic that interests you and that you can write about in an interesting way.
Don’t worry: you don’t have to get a college degree in the subject (though it may help). But pick a subject that generates a lot of interest and traffic but other writers shy away from. (Health care is just one example.) Brush up your knowledge on that topic regularly, by joining newsgroups and e-classes for example. Learn to write about it in an easily understandable way. Soon you will be able to classify yourself as an expert and clients who see your knowledge and your professional writing skills will be clamoring to hire you.
Some professional writing skills never change: You will always need to excel at grammar, spelling, editing and customer service. However, to give your career that extra push in 2010, be sure to give special emphasis to the three skills.
