Do you want to build a web writing career? There’s big money to be made in writing for the online world, but you need a strategy for success. Most web writers spend too long dithering when they could be increasing their income.

Let’s look at a process you can follow.

1. Write for Yourself, As Well As for Others

When I train new writers, the biggest hurdle they need to overcome is that of transitioning from writing for clients to creating their own projects and writing for themselves.

When you’re writing for others, you’re trading time for money. When you create your own projects, such as ebooks and other information products, you create the product once and can keep on selling it for years… this residual income gives you security.

If you aren’t yet writing for yourself, start now.

2. Set Some Goals, and Achieve Them

Do you have goals? Many writers don’t, but if you don’t know where you’re going you’ve got no chance of achieving what you want to achieve.

If you’re not sure how to strategize and how to set goals, get some professional advice from a writing coach. This advice will pay for itself very swiftly because it stops you wasting time.

3. Develop Better Work Habits: Be More Productive

Professional writers who are making a high income know that the more they write, the more they earn. Therefore their entire day is focused on productivity.

The speed at which you can build a great career depends on your own work habits. Create processes which work for you, and track how you spend your time, every day.

Do it for a month, and you’ll never go back to a slapdash way of working.

4. Study and Learn, Your Income Depends on It

Someone once said that being a writer was like always having homework.

This is very true. With the explosive growth of the web, there’s a lot to learn. If you want to increase your income, you have to be worth more to the people who hire you… you increase your worth by increasing your knowledge.

Be prepared to pay for your web writing education. You’ll find that it’s money well spent.
